The Only Thing I’d Replace My Car With

I know a lot of us play that “what’s my next car going to be” usually like the day after we buy a car. Well I don’t do that much anymore. Partially because my fun hobby has shift away from 4 wheels and into 2. But also because my car is just about everything I want and need. It’s a fun to drive family car that is capable of towing a boat or small trailer, and has a roof rack. It’s a rolling compromise between owning a 4 door truck, and owning a sports car. Aka between my needs and wants. It also looks great, and is a comfortable car with heated seats, and sunroof. Those are more like pluses than core concerns.

There’s not a lot of cars out there that fit my desires as well as my E90. But the one car is gladly trade it for would be an E61. The bangle 5 series is IMO a great looking car, especially in wagon form. Every time I see this black on I get a bit jealous. I think at this point I’d be safe to say that my dreamiest dream car is a blue E61 540i with camel brown interior and a manual trans. AWD preferably. That probably doesn’t exist but I can still dream.

you should replace it with a 2005-2006 Altima

Okay no.

But also maybe an SE-R, with a Pro-Charger. I wonder how hard it is to get the VQ kit to fit on a FWD car.

Those don't exist in the rust belt anymore.

Pretty sure the wagons were all AWD. At least they were when I was semi-seriously  looking for one.

It finding a manual one might be literally impossible. Or finding one in a color, with the brown interior that can’t be easy.

When my brother was looking to buy his wife a car I found him a gorgeous maroon, brown e91 for a very reasonable price and he wouldn’t look at it because he’s very anti BMW. Instead he spent 18 grand on a 3 year old Corolla that he hates because it’s boring, and cramped, and has a CVT trans that acts up and might just fail at any minute.

Damn. I looked for a diesel e91 around the same time as I was looking for e61s. Did they make manual E61s? I drove a couple manual E60 550s, and honestly... I stuck with the auto. I just thought the manual was really subpar.

Solid 9/10 there. Just needs to be reupholstered. I can’t stand black leather  interior.

That may just be the best possible combination I can think of for a modern four door Bimmer. Only needs a tan interior.

They are honestly rather good looking cars. Not terribly brave in the styling department but today I was watching one drive by and though, “hmmmm.” Needs more coupe though.

These are still on every corner in the not-rust-belt. I’m always surprised given the issues the V6s had.

These rusted particularly badly. Floors would rust put in 10 years. The subframes weren't far behind.

I never knew that. There are a good deal of transplant cars around here but not all cars show their rust evenly. I’ve seen GM trucks that you can see clean through from one side of the bed to the other but most of the time it’s not major visible rust. I’ve never noticed bubbling on an Altima. Must have mostly been underbody stuff.

Yeah, the Altimas and Maxima's of the era had all of their evil underneath. My generation of truck's big weakness in a the rocker panels, which have rotted out. I'm planning to get them replaced before too long. Also, brake lines. Which I have already replaced.

It’s easy to spot a 2000s GM truck that has spent time up north by how transparent its sides are.
